Michael gets the latest on using CALPUFF from the experts

Katestone Air Quality Consultant, Dr Michael Burchill recently spent the day in Sydney attending the Advanced CALPUFF training course. Michael was pretty excited to have the opportunity to meet the model developers and course presenters, Joe Scire and Jenny Barclay.

“The course offered an insight into the development process of the CALPUFF model and provided a sneak peek into upcoming features, such as the specialised source categories for flares and roads. Of particular interest were improvements to the model capabilities which enable us to take full advantage of increased computing power,” Michael said.

CALPUFF is one of Katestone’s modelling workhorses. It is used for many applications ranging from dust from coal mining to power station plumes and agricultural odours. The course was aimed at experienced users and worked through a number of advanced problems and case studies. Highlights of the day included:

• A case study of an aluminium reduction plant situated in the highly complex terrain of eastern Iceland
• An introduction to new options for flare modelling – currently unreleased
• Discussion of the sensitivities around source parameterisation for dust modelling
• An opportunity to play with the new model GUI and CALApps

The Advanced CALPUFF training course formed part of the training activities of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ).
