Katestone hosts AMOS Brisbane AGM

On March 25, Katestone proudly hosted the Annual General Meeting of the Brisbane Centre of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS).

AMOS is an independent society supporting and fostering interest in meteorology, oceanography and related sciences. The society provides a forum for people with a common interest and publishes research.

AMOS Brisbane Regional Centre Chair, Hamish McGowan convened the AGM. At the meeting, Hamish passed the office of Brisbane Centre Chair on to Katestone principal meteorologist, Andrew Wiebe.

Andrew is looking forward to embracing this leadership role over the coming year. Andrew gained his honours BSc from the University of Cantebury and has commenced a PhD, part-time, at the University of Queensland.

The meeting also heard from eminent scientist Dr Kamal Puri on the latest developments with Australia’s ACCESS model.

The assembled teraflop of meteorologists enjoyed Dr Puri’s fascinating overview of the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS) Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model, its status and plans for its future.

Dr. Puri is the ACCESS Project Research Leader from The Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research (CAWCR) in Melbourne.

According to CAWCR Director Dr Tom Keenan,

‘ACCESS is fulfilling an important role in providing world leading climate change information specifically to inform and serve our national interest.’

ACCESS also underpins Australia’s weather and climate forecasting.

With ACCESS, Australian scientists can contribute to major international model intercomparison projects.

Dr Puri described the NWP and the coupled system used for the CMIP5 simulations for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fifth Assessment Report.
